What it means (plain English)
PMS performance in India is not a single number. SEBI-registered Portfolio Management Services disclose monthly time-weighted returns (TWRR). Investors then ask for CAGR, max drawdown, calendar years, and rolling windows.
Know Your PMS rebuilds those windows from the same monthly matrix for every listed strategy. When a month was never filed, the series has a gap — we leave it blank instead of stuffing zero. That is why some scorecards show Not reported even when a marketing PDF prints a neat since-inception figure.
Brand queries (“Marcellus performance”, “strategy-name returns”) should land on the firm or strategy scorecard. Head queries (“PMS performance India”, “best PMS performance”) should land on reports, the leaderboard, or highest CAGR.
Worked example (how a window becomes CAGR)
A strategy files 24 consecutive month-end 1M TWRR values. Know Your PMS can publish a 1Y and ~2Y CAGR path. If month 18 is missing, trailing windows that require that month stay Not reported until the filing appears — we do not backfill imaginary 0% months.
For market-wide “who led FY YTD?” questions, open the performance reports hub. For “who leads on CAGR with ≥12 months?” open Best PMS by CAGR. For a named firm, open the PMS company page (/pms/...) and drill into each strategy’s performance FAQ.
Why it matters for PMS scheme selection
Chasing a single headline return without knowing the filing basis is how HNIs buy last year’s flyer. Transparent, reconcilable SEBI monthlies let you compare apples to apples — and walk away when the track is too short.
- Separates marketing decks from filed TWRR
- Explains Not reported without inventing data
- Routes brand vs head performance intent to the right URL
- Supports shortlists of 2–3 strategies, not league-table shopping
- Anchors diligence in methodology, not vibes
How to interpret it (practical checklist)
- Confirm the as-of filing month on the scorecard
- Prefer ≥12 months before trusting CAGR / Calmar
- Read max drawdown alongside CAGR, not instead of it
- Use reports for market windows; entity pages for brand queries
- Cross-check persistence with Performance Persistence Myth
- Build a 2–3 strategy shortlist in compare — research only
Common mistakes
- Treating PMSBazaar or brochure SI figures as interchangeable with SEBI monthlies without reconciling
- Ranking on 3-month hot streaks as if they were multi-year performance
- Ignoring Not reported and filling mental zeros
- Using the leaderboard as advice instead of a screening rail
- Searching a brand name but reading only a market-wide FY report

Frequently asked questions
- Where should I look for PMS performance in India?
- Start with Know Your PMS performance reports for market windows, the performance leaderboard for ranked cuts, and Best PMS by CAGR for CAGR-led screening. Open a firm or strategy page for brand-specific returns.
- How does Know Your PMS measure PMS performance?
- From SEBI month-end 1M TWRR filings. Trailing CAGR and similar windows need enough consecutive months; we never invent zeros for unfiled months.
- What does Not reported mean on a scorecard?
- The track is too short or months are missing for that window. Sparse histories stay visible for path metrics when allowed, but CAGR/calendar/rolling-12 stay gated.
